The New American Dream is a Ted Talk spoken by Courtney Martin, a journalist, in February of 2016. Martin has a very unique view of the American Dream and how she believes it needs to change. Her presentation embodies the changes America has gone through and how the perception of the ultimate dream has changed. Martin's main point expressed throughout this speech is that the traditional American Dream is outdated and unrealistic. The traditional American Dream is a dream of acquiring money and materialistic items to show off success and that everyone has the ability to move up the social ladder. She also exclaims that is more important to be a part of the community and be a team player rather than do everything with you own personal gain in mind, "The most reliable wealth is found in relationship." Also, you have to set goals and cannot be afraid to achieve them "Turns out, the biggest danger is not failing to achieve the American Dream."
Courtney Martin establishes minimal ethos by stating she is a journalist, she is not an expert on the topic in which she was presenting. She also states little statistics about the American Dream and what relates to it therefore not much logos was present. In my opinion Pathos was the most evident because she relied heavily on her own opinions and relating them to personal experience and what others can connect to.
This Ted Talk had a similar point to William Zinsser in "The Right to Fail," when Martin expressed not to be afraid of failure just like Zinsser said. Also it related to the PARADE magazine by sharing views on how the traditional American Dream was dead and irrelevant to today's standards.
I enjoyed watching this Ted Talk and I agree that money and materialistic items are not the only components of the American Dream however I believe they play a larger role than she admitted to. I also agree that failure is not something to be feared but something to be embraced.
